  • About the role

  • This is an exciting opportunity to join a high-performing Development Management team in a newly created position, following a transformation of our Planning Service.

As a Senior Planning Officer, you’ll handle a diverse portfolio of planning applications - ranging from complex minor developments to large-scale major proposals, depending on your experience. You'll be instrumental in delivering high-quality planning outcomes across the borough.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Determine planning applications in accordance with national and local policies.
    • Provide expert planning advice through our pre-application advice service.
    • Offer clear, accessible guidance to residents, applicants, colleagues, and councillors.
    • Represent the Council in planning appeals, hearings, and public inquiries as required.
    • Contribute to delivering high standards of customer service and efficient decision-making.

This role is ideal for an experienced Planning Officer looking to take the next step in their career, with the support of an experienced and friendly team.

    About You

We’re looking for a professional who is passionate about delivering excellent planning services and thrives in a fast-paced environment. You should be a confident communicator with a strong customer focus and the ability to manage competing demands effectively.

    You will have:

    • A degree or diploma in Town & Country Planning or a related field (e.g., geography, construction, architecture, or design).
    • Membership of the RTPI, or be working towards it.
    • Demonstrable experience in managing planning applications within a local authority setting.
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
    • Excellent time management and organisational ability.
    • Competence in using ICT and planning software systems.
    A full driving licence (essential).

For a full list of criteria, please refer to the Job Description and Person Specification.

For further information, or an informal discussion about the role, please contact Ed Laughton - Area Planning Service Manager - Central and South ([email protected]).
