  • About the role

  • We’re looking for an experienced Prosecutions Lawyer to join our Litigation and Public Protection Team, delivering a high-quality, professional legal service that supports the Council’s enforcement and public protection work.

In this fast-paced and rewarding role, you’ll be responsible for managing a varied caseload of criminal and regulatory prosecutions, ensuring all cases are progressed efficiently and in line with relevant legislation, procedural rules, and Council policy.

You’ll provide expert legal advice to client departments and colleagues, working collaboratively across the Council to protect residents and uphold public confidence through fair and effective enforcement.

    Key responsibilities

    • Take conduct of a wide range of prosecution matters, including planning enforcement, trading standards, environmental protection offences, housing fraud, and health & safety violations.

    • Manage cases from initial investigation through to conclusion, including drafting charges, preparing bundles, and conducting advocacy in the Magistrates’ Court (and where appropriate, the Crown Court).

    • Provide clear, pragmatic legal advice to client departments and stakeholders, ensuring decisions are legally robust and in the public interest.

    • Draft high-quality legal documents such as summonses, witness statements, case summaries, and other court papers.

    • Support the Litigation and Public Protection team with administrative and case management tasks to ensure the smooth running of the service.

    • Build strong working relationships across departments and external agencies to achieve positive outcomes for the Council and residents.

    • Ensure all cases comply with legislative and procedural requirements, Council policies, and professional standards.

    About you

You will be a confident and motivated legal professional with experience handling criminal or regulatory prosecutions in a local authority or similar public sector setting. You’ll thrive in a busy environment, balancing competing priorities with professionalism, efficiency, and integrity.

    You should also have:

    • A recognised legal qualification (Solicitor, Barrister, or CILEX) with current practising certificate.

    • Strong advocacy skills and experience presenting cases in court.

    • Excellent drafting, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.

    • Proven experience managing a high-volume caseload to tight deadlines.

    • The ability to provide clear legal advice on complex or sensitive matters.

    • Excellent organisational and communication skills, with a proactive, “can-do” approach.

    Why join us?

At Hillingdon, you’ll be part of a supportive and dedicated Legal Services team that values collaboration, development, and excellence in public service. You’ll have the opportunity to work on a diverse range of cases that make a tangible difference to the community, while developing your expertise in regulatory and criminal law.
