    Urban Designer/Conservation officers working within Hillingdon Council are at the forefront of ensuring our communities are well-designed, healthy, and inclusive places in which people will want to live, work and relax.

    What does Urban Design and Conservation Officer do at Hillingdon

    The Urban Design and Conservation Officer role is an entry level position.  You will support the senior officers in the team by providing input into a range of urban design and conservation matters.  

    The work will include assisting Development Management undertaking planning casework, under supervision on a full range of cases, to provide well written urban design and conservation comments on planning applications.  Working to identify the issues within the deadlines in a manner that is consistent with meeting corporate targets and objectives. As well as participating in matters relating to policy compliance and enforcement.

    You will assist in the preparation and review of Conservation Area Appraisals and producing an evidence base for Areas of Special Local Character to ensure up-to-date guidance is available. As well as assessment of suggested Locally Listed buildings.

    You will collaborate with the Principle Urban Designer to assist with the preparation of site capacity and feasibility studies and help with project management liaising and engaging with the local community.  Producing these studies will require basic drawing, GIS, 3D modelling and graphic design skills.

    You will have a relevant post-graduate qualification, eligibility for membership of a relevant professional body, and ideally experience of working in a similar role in a local planning authority context.

    About you:

    We are looking for a passionate and enthusiastic individual with a keen interest in Urban Design and Conservation who is eager to learn and develop their skills in a supportive and nurturing environment. Ideally, you should have 3-5 years post qualification work experience in either private practice or the public sector.

    Our ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate how they meet the below criteria:

    • Experience of providing urban design and conservation advice for pre-applications and planning applications under the supervision of a Principal Conservation and Urban Design Officer;
    • Able to contribute to urban design strategies, capacity and feasibility studies utilizing 3D modelling, GIS and desktop publishing software;
    • Ability to assist in the preparation, research and review of Conservation Area Appraisals and Areas of Special Local Character evidence base to ensure up-to-date guidance is available;
    • To assist in administering and managing Hillingdon’s Design Review Panels;
    • Help the Principal Conservation Officer with ‘buildings at risk’ projects and enforcement cases;
    • A degree in building conservation, architecture, urban design, landscape architecture, architectural history, planning or other appropriate professional qualification and eligible member or working toward full membership of a professional body.
