  • About the role

  • The role purpose of the Elective Home Education Officer is to ensure the effective delivery of statutory duties related to Elective Home Education (EHE). This includes ensuring that children receiving home education have access to an education that is suitable for their age, aptitude, and any special educational needs they may have.
     
    We are committed to ensuring that all children receive a suitable education that meets their needs and aspirations. Our team works closely with families, schools, and other agencies to support and monitor elective home education. We are looking for a dedicated and knowledgeable individual to join us as an Elective Home Education Officer.
     

    As an Elective Home Education Officer, you will be responsible for the effective delivery of statutory duties related to Elective Home Education (EHE). You will provide advice, guidance, and professional support to families who choose to educate their children at home.

     
    The key responsibilities of the role include:
    • Engaging with parents/carers to ensure they are providing a suitable education according to the Education Act 1996.
    • Developing respectful and supportive relationships with families while maintaining the responsibilities and duties of the Local Authority.
    • Collaborating with colleagues and partner agencies to address the needs of EHE children and reduce the risk of poor outcomes.
    • Acting as the first point of contact for schools and parents interested in or electing to home educate their children.
    • Assessing the suitability of the education provided by parents/carers and offering advice and guidance for improvement.
    • Keeping accurate records and maintaining an up-to-date database of EHE children.
    • Identifying and supporting EHE children and families who may require additional support due to safeguarding concerns or special educational needs.

    • Understanding of the legal framework that underpins Elective Home Education.
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
    • Experience working with a range of agencies involved in the welfare and education of young people.
    • Ability to keep accurate records and maintain a database.
