  • About the role

  • We are seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable Elective Home Education Lead Officer to join our team. The successful candidate will lead the effective delivery of statutory duties regarding Elective Home Education (EHE) and ensure that children have access to an education suitable to their age, aptitude, and any special educational needs. This role involves providing advice, guidance, and professional support in all aspects of EHE, engaging with EHE children and their families, and ensuring the Local Authority fulfills its safeguarding responsibilities.
     

    The key responsibilities of the role include:

    • Engage with parents/carers who have chosen to educate their children at home, offering advice and guidance while maintaining the responsibilities and duties of the Local Authority.
    • Triage EHE referrals, collaborate with various parties, and develop appropriate conclusions regarding education provision.
    • Provide pedagogical advice, share resources, and support EHE parents/carers in providing a suitable and safe education.
    • Assess the suitability of education provided by parents/carers under the terms of section 7 of the Education Act 1996.
    • Maintain an up-to-date database of EHE children, analyse data, and produce reports for stakeholders.
    • Organize an annual event for EHE families to share good practice.
    • Identify and support EHE children and families who may require additional support due to safeguarding concerns or special educational needs.
    • Liaise with schools and other LA services to support the reintegration of EHE children into mainstream education if desired.
    • Contribute to the development and implementation of the Council’s Elective Home Education policy and procedures.
    • Follow Hillingdon Council’s safeguarding procedures in relation to all safeguarding/child protection concerns.

    About You

     
    The essential criteria for the role include:
    • Understanding of the legal framework underpinning Elective Home Education.
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage with children, young people, parents, and carers.
    • Knowledge of educational philosophies and the ability to provide advice on a range of pedagogical approaches.
    • Experience working successfully with a range of agencies involved in the welfare and education of young people.
    • Knowledge of both Primary and Secondary curriculum, SEND Code of Practice, safeguarding procedures, and Post 16 pathways.
    • Excellent advisory and diplomacy skills, with the ability to engage parents/carers effectively.
    • Good ICT skills.
