  • Are you looking for a hands-on role where you can make a meaningful contribution to the community? Do you take pride in maintaining public spaces with dignity and care? If so, we have an exciting opportunity for a Grave Digger to join our Green Spaces, Sport and Leisure team within Resident Services at the London Borough of Hillingdon.

    As a Grave Digger, you will be responsible for carrying out grave digging and cemetery maintenance to the highest standards. You will ensure that all graves are prepared with precision, maintaining safety and compliance at all times. This role also involves maintaining the cemetery grounds, supporting funeral services, and upholding the highest level of customer care when working with bereaved families and funeral directors.

    Key Responsibilities 
    • Grave preparation – locating and digging graves with precision and care.
    • Cemetery maintenance – grass cutting, shrub maintenance, and ensuring grave sites are tidy.
    • Procession management – walking the funeral procession to gravesites and preparing the area.
    • Health & Safety compliance – ensuring all grave sites are safe and secure.
    • Equipment and machinery operation – using ground maintenance tools and vehicles as required.

    Qualifications and Experience

    We are looking for a reliable and physically capable individual with experience in grave digging, landscaping, or grounds maintenance. You must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions and handle the sensitive nature of the role with professionalism and care.

    • A good standard of English and Mathematics
    • Experience in a cemetery operations or grave digging role (or transferable experience in landscaping/grounds maintenance)
    • Knowledge of Health & Safety regulations relevant to the role
    • Ability to use powered ground maintenance machinery
    • A full UK driving licence (or equivalent)
    • Willingness to wear PPE and work flexibly to meet service needs
